My friend returned and collected her bugs - their oldest boy was relieved I hadn’t killed any, and gave me some tips for finding salamanders when we go to the redwoods in a week (flip every log, they are brown or green or yellow and they sometimes look like snakes and you can test them by poking them with a long stick). We were pretty fascinated by the whole thing, so we bought our own bug cage (WHFWM). In the cage are Geraldine, the first caterpillar we found in our milkweed patch, a small container for new hatchlings (that’s Tiffany in the corner), and a small container for eggs.
We also have an old plastic quarantine tub for dirty old Bethany, who was acting real weird and needed to be isolated for 48hrs to prove she wasn’t brimming over with wasp larvae, because that’s a very real thing, and I am learning more about it than I ever cared to know.

Photos by Tim Laman @timlaman | Lions vs. Buffalo – Part II – Advantage Buffalo. We came upon a lion hunt that appeared to have gone awry. Lions were pursuing a herd of buffalo, but instead of isolating a buffalo to attack, a young male lion found himself surrounded by a herd of very angry buffalo that lashed out at him. For several minutes, we witnessed the incredible power of the buffalo, as they hooked the helpless lion with their horns and tossed him repeatedly into the air. It was very apparent why buffalo are considered one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. We thought the lion was going to be killed on the spot, but after about ten minutes, the buffalo abandoned him and he staggered to the bushes. It was hard to imagine he would live for long.
At times these scenes were not pleasant to watch, I will admit. Nature can be harsh. But it was real, and it was amazing to witness the cycle of life in a place that is still wild. We need places like that on Earth, and it is good for us to visit them. As Tennyson wrote, on this day, we truly witnessed “Nature, red in tooth and claw.” #lions #buffalo #Tanzania #Ngorongoro #natureredintoothandclaw

Photos by Tim Laman @TimLaman | Lions vs. Buffalo—Part I: Advantage Lions. In one incredible day on safari in Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania, we witnessed several hunts and attempted hunts between lions and buffalo. This attack began with two lionesses. The first grabbed the buffalo by the neck while the second tried to attack from behind. It seemed to be a stalemate for six minutes. Then reinforcements showed up in the form of the two males and other females from the pride. I captured the second image when the first male to arrive leaped onto the buffalo’s back. It didn’t take long after that for the buffalo to fall. Lions have to eat… Go to @TimLaman to see Lions vs. Buffalo—Part II: Advantage Buffalo.

It is easy to think that insects just happily fly from flower to flower gathering pollen and sipping nectar. Nature, red in tooth and claw. WARNING: If you're particularly sensitive, you may want to skip the photos and video in this post.
While looking for wildflowers today, I spotted this Red Tailed Hawk in a nearby tree. It was clearly homed in on something so I stuck around hoping for in flight shots.
It snatched a squirrel right off a tree about 8'/2.5m up then flopped over and "landed" upside down in a bush. It didn't appear panicked or really tangled. It was evidently just waiting for the squirrel to expire.
That didn't take long.
The hawk then extricated itself and went about preparing lunch. I didn't want to disturb it any more or see a squirrel get torn to pieces, so went back to looking for nice, nonviolent flowers.

Dramatic scenes at #Kirstenbosch #CapeTown as a #spiderwasp chased down a #spider (unidentified but a healthy size) paralysed it and then dragged it across a wide path, up and across a bench, scarcely waiting for the lady occupant to move, then down and onwards to a flowerbed. The persistence of the wasp was amazing because the fight started up a tree and continued forward metres across the ground before the spider was defeated. The wasp's long legs and sting enabled it to keep clear of the spider's fangs and the outcome seemed to be inevitable. #natureredintoothandclaw #insect overcomes #arachnid #macro #loveJesuslovelife
